A man questions the distinction between originality and duplication in works of art. A woman battles fatigue while raising a son, nourishing a career, and compensating for an absent husband. The two meet and learn a tremendous amount from each other.
Certified Copy is an artful and intellectual, nay brilliant, little film. The subject matter is explored deliberately through layers of imagery and sound, which are cast one over the other and then reflected back on to themselves. Kiarostami commands the inseparable harmonic and melodic constituents of cinema’s symphony, and in so doing, gently nudges the audience through thoughtful notions of love, reliance, and authenticity in all its forms.
